Licensing, answered plainly

Managing your own data, for your own non-commercial purposes, on machines you own. Backing up your photo library, your homelab or your film archive is personal use. Anything done by a company, for a company, or in support of revenue-generating work needs a Commercial licence — including a sole trader backing up client deliverables.

The source is published and readable at github.com/KONG-GROUP/dctl, and the on-disk format is fully specified so your data is never hostage to the tool. The licence is proprietary: free for personal use, paid for commercial and corporate use.

Nothing. Your vaults are files on storage you control, in a design-frozen format with a published specification and a dependency-free C99 reference decoder. A licence lapse never makes your data unreadable — that is the entire point of the twenty-year restorability principle.

Commercial licensing is per seat — per person who uses DCTL — not per machine. One engineer running it on a laptop, a workstation and a CI runner needs one seat. Enterprise site licences remove seat counting entirely.

Partly, and we would rather say so than sell you a surprise. The crypto core, the frozen format, the encrypted index and the local backend are complete and exercised. The B2, S3 and R2 backends are implemented but have not yet been verified end to end against live providers, and the CLI is still mid-flight. The status table on this site tracks it honestly.
